This is an open-ended thread asking the question: how did you get interested in vampires and/or why do you consider yourself a "vampire" ?
Myself, I was always a fan of the Hammer vamp films of the 1960's/1970's -- and that's the extent of it. I don't consider myself a vampire in any sense of the term -- unless it's October 31st and I put on a cape!
I'm very interested in hearing the responses from other members...

Yes, I'm *that* Vlad...

I think I always had a fascination for vampire lore. It was heightened by the card/RP game Vampire: The Masquerade - played that way too much. Also, reading "Lost Souls" by Poppy Z. Brite, cemented my attraction to vampires. Like Vlad, I only play one at times on 10/31 and periodically, in RPGs.
My main attraction is the thought of living forever (or for a very long time). I can imagine that would get old after losing those you grow close to over years and years. But, it's a fascinating component to vampiric lore.

I think my first introduction to Vampyres was in the Christopher Lee movies (The thought of a drop of blood being able to reanimate a pile of ashes! Brilliant!) and a very old copy of Bram Stokers Dracula I stumbled on in my Grandfathers library when I was about 8. Of course you would always see a few Vampyres at Halloween. The Munsters made them approachable, who wouldn't hug Grampa. Then Forever Knight came forth and the Vampyre grew a conscience (Note that this site was already brimming with Vampyres by then
I've always enjoyed the Goth culture and the welding of the Vampyre within it. Skin stays nice in avoidance of over-sunning and black is my favorite un-color.

I have been interested in Vampyres for as long as I can remember.
I believe in the supernatural and the Psi abilities. (However, if there is such a thing as a real vampyre, i.e., the kind found in fiction, I have yet to see or hear of them.)
However, I do believe that people who claim to be Vampyres, have needs above and beyond normal sustenance. There are actual blood diseases that require constant transfusions of Hemaglobin. (i.e. porphyria, hemaphelia, etc.)
And, I find the Vampyre culture very sensual. That never hurts. *gg*

i got interested in vampires 13 years ago at the age of 16 when i realized i was going through the change. i am both psi and sanginarous (blood drinking) vampire. my vampire parents are both alive and well immortal. lol. i read alot of books about vampires and the closest writer is j. r. ward. she pretty much sums it up perfect though i think she got info from one of our kind so.. when i was younger (teenager) i use to dress up and think my fangs are realler then your fangs lol.
Crystal
I can relate to BloodCrystal......i too am a Psi Vamp aswel as Sanginarous, and i also consider myself a Sexual Vampire...i feed on desire
I used to identify with Anne Rice's character, Mona Mayfair alot when i was younger.....lol, my natural locks are as red as the blood i seek.....far removed from my black hair i dye regularly
same as them i love to feed on desire, and i even bite my friends sometimes. To be strainght forward im a bitch...im sensetive sometimes too i dont have many friends, if anyone would belive it im part warewolf too its hard to look and act "normal" when you're as different as me, the only person i can trust is my best friend amber shes so nice to me...
jelousy usualy works the oposite way you want it to...
when you needed me
i was there,
when i needed you
you left me to die...
I don't know when my fascination with the all things vampyric started... I was way too young. I remember being like six or something and checking out all, and when I say all, I mean ALL of the books the tiny local library had in the kid's section on vampyres and horror in general. Then I read them all. And that's when my mom realized that I wasn't normal.
That's when my teachers realized I had above average intelligence.
That's when I realized that I love vampyres. I think... Like I said, I don't really remember much before that. I just remember that the librarian looked at me like I was nuts and my mom told her to humor me. I look back and giggle a little because I realize that I caused so much trouble when I was younger. I was so bad...

Wow, Vlad...those's are a couple of real questions...You trying to get us to think? *grins*
I've always been interested in anything that wasn't the norm: you know, ghosts, vampires, researching the ties between the LDS and the FreeMasons - you know anything that isn't natural. *giggles*
I was never what most ppl would consider normal, nor never will be. I think I was 10 or so when I started really looking into Vampyre lore, and devouring anything I could get my hands on. I started with Anne Rice, and moved on to other authors Poppy Z, Christopher Golden, Jothnathan Nasaw (the list goes on and on, but I started with them first). I was the same with movies, watching anything that even vaguely suggested vampires.
I've always been what you call a psi 'pyre, or an emotional vampire (as we called it back in the day). Feeding on others emotions and feelings and watching then become blank and feeling myself more enlivened. Anyone that knows me, knows that more often than not I don't convey emotions well, unless I'm drawing them from someone else.
I don't really consider myself a sang pyre, but am starting to rethink that with the current torrent of dreams...I enjoy the taste of blood, but the cravings were never really there (until lately), it was more like a mild euphoria from taking something vital.

I have been interested in the paranormal and vapirism since i was a little girl, but my passion for knowledge about the subject started recently, when i dated a pysco that felt the need to nail my cat to the door and drain its blood for a snack. Needless to say we aren't dating any longer, but my curiousity never wained. I also noticed that friends feel tired around me, and that i can sometimes invade my friends dreams. I am also mistaken for being a goth, though i am not, but people always seem to ask me if its halloween yet, or if I have many problems... Its then that i question their sanity...
Do not say you know me, because you don't. It is worthless to try.

I've always had an "unnatural" fascination with blood, but it's only been in the past few months that the Urge made me ealize I "wanted" to consume it...

My first proper introduction to vampire's (or any creture ofd the night for that matter) was at the age of about 7(i think) when my parents left the tv on and some really gory vampire movie came on. I don't know what it was called but it got me into horrors a lot and of course vampires tend to come up in alot of horror movies and i always thought that of all the horror fiends it would be coolest to be a vamp. but to be honest i didn't truly become fascinated with vampires untill i started writing songs which is soon after i bought a guitar (age 15). At the time i was planning on making a horror punk band (a bit like the misfits) and i just found that vampires made such great metaphors for so many things in life eg i've often used vampires as a metephor for people who exploit other people, the fear of mortality and they are great metaphors for lust amoung many other things. Also i've had some problems with insomnia in the past (and in the present to be honest) and i guess i found a strange relation with vampires in that sense.
I have two bodies together as one, the stiller i stand, the faster i run
what am i?
Vampires Will Never Hurt You
I'm not a vampire, but I sometimes think it would be fascinating to be one. I developed an interest via The Vampire Chronicles, and have been reading vampire fiction ever since (some twenty years or so now). I am in the process of plotting a novel which will, of course, be vampire fiction. I find the vampire subculture interesting. I understand the appeal, and I certainly understand the concept of psi vamps (having been in the presence of a few in my time).
i started to get interesed about vampires when y was like 9 to 10 years then i forgot about it, in the last two years some people start to ask me some questions i realy dont know aw to explain them.... with the time i figure that i was i psyvamp, first i didnt accept it, but here i am and i will live with me the rest of my life. now i like it because i think that i am a psyvamp and like others i have more gifts that are interesting....

My interest in vampyres started a while ago. Although like most I have never actually enjoyed the taste of blood, I definitely love the glamourous idea of being a vampyre. The eternal life, the libido, being able to read minds which I can kind of do already. i started putting two and two together and that is when I became real interested. I read just about any book I can find about it fiction or non. I stumbled upon the website by accident. Good thing I did, this has been great. Definitely meeting lots of cool people.
I suppose...there's several ways to say how I got here. Depending on the hear/now when/what you're interested in. YOu could say it started with a science fiction book about a boy from Mars, or you could say it was the first femaale fantasy series I ever read, Darkover, which is all a sort of misdirection.
I've met some fine writers along the way, and even if they weren't great a prose, I generally found an interesting idea or two. Particularly fond of Ursula le guin for her political text, Anita for her balls, and a certain sinnsinnaattie wiich for her sense of humor and cute girlfried.
where do I change my password, btw? I may have to reenter under a new beginning. sue me.
I don't consider myself a vampire. I'm just fascinated with them for as long as I can remember(I think it started with the novel Dracula, but I'm not sure how old I was).
Forget love - I'd rather fall in chocolate!
I tried being normal once.. it didn't work out.

I had no choice in the matter. I was encouraged to do so...

Flies? Flies? Poor puny things! Who wants to eat flies? Not when I can get nice fat spiders!
I just kinda grew up around psi vamps, & pretty much knew it all my life. I would watch my Mother drain people around her of energy, & at a very young age I figured out how to protect myself. It was a natural next step to learn to take energy, but then I had to learn how to give, too.
It wasn't until I was a teen that I first had an interest in blood; but I never acted upon that desire. Haven't yet, either.
So I just have basically known most my life. And my circadian clock has always been more primed to be up all night rather than in the day: I have had to teach myself to stay awake during the day; used to fall asleep in school alot! But having had kids, I had to make sure I could stay up during the day.
So there's my connection.
Not sure what my connection is per se. I grew up in a family full of psychics and in a culture that is full of spirituality as well as the church influence. Growing up in such a family had a very ordinary side to it though as they were all quite traditional in their professional pusuits etc. I have always had a connection to the land and felt power in different places, later on in life when I found out about lay lines some of that seemed to connect up. I've always felt dead peole around and was often very frightened as a child and had to sleep with the light on. My fascination with ghosts started as far back as I can remember as did vampires. I must have watched every Hammer Horror movie there was and then all the old reruns of vintage horror films on late night BBC. I have always read nearly all I can get my hands on.
The psi vampire thing interests me as I am sure mant people draw from others without realsing that they are doing this, I also suffer from depleted energy a lot of the time so may have to learn how to protect meyself. If I had my way I'd have a two way sleep pattern, wake early morning go back to bed late morning, sleep until late afternoon, then be up very late. Can't go this though with work and kids. That's my connection.
Rowan
Very interesting, Rowan. I grew up in a family of "normal" people, meaning I am the only one interested in vamps, the occult, etc. I'm sure they'd all have raised eyebrows if I ever discussed my interest in wicca or talk about my OBE's. I too love any old Hammer movies, even the non-vamp ones. Just something about them that piques my interest.
Yes, I'm *that* Vlad...
Hi Vlad.
I know what you mean about the Hammer movies I have a lot of the old ones with Peter Cushing starring as the various Frankensteins. My aim is to collect the entire Hammer batch as well as the TV series that they did, that was great. I also like the very old ones with Bella Lugosi, Lone Chaney and Boris Karlof.
My family although they are very fey are quite traditional, you get that strange mix in Scotland and Ireland, it's an odd mix of the church and the old ways and the culture. I have comprehensively studied my culture and it's spiritual side which eventually gave rise to the English Wiccan movement. I acknowledge and live the concepts as much as I can. I find you have to be pretty careful who you open up to as people still think it's all a bit odd. I have started my first novel, vampire of course , based on the Scottish legend. I find it interesting that like dragons and ghosts, vampires are in nearly every culture in some form, not sure about the Native American tribes. Whether this is based on some factual evidence way, way back or some kind of genetic memory, who knows; I'm not about to presume enough to theorise, I may take a stab at a hypothesis.
Rowan
I feel so much the same as what you have said. I too grew up in a so called normal family but there are things that are just not said in my family. It is like we know but we don't discuss it. I love the old horror films and again I too had to sleep with the lights on from the time I was an infant. Native tribes had them too I am pretty sure, the mayan culture is my interest and I am writing a book (yes vampire one) about the start and the Mayan culture. I have been working on it though for a bit over 11 years and honestly not sure if I will ever be done or if anyone will ever read it. My family would think it a bit strange, but then I have that quality anyway, lol. Your sleep pattern is exactly what I would love to do and now my kids are pretty much grown and independent I do that sometimes. My husband is what keeps me grounded and he is logical, early to rise, early to bed kind of guy, which is in some ways fortunate when I have my insomnia nights. Peace be with you.

i think im close to being a vamp but im still not sure... the reason i think this is because my dad abandoned me when i was only 1 and i look apsolutly nothing like my mom. i can sit in the sun for only about 4 hours but then i just cant stand it <-- which is weird....) and i never get tan so i just stick to this pale ivoryish color.. my eyes change color to the mood im in that day so one day they can be silver and others they can be a light purple or even yellow its soo weird... i can make friends no prob but i always feel uncofortable when im around them idk why i just do... i have bronze color hair and iv never dyed it... and i know some laguage from the eurapean countries i just dont know what it is... some of my friends say it sounds like italien and others say it sounds like something else.... i dont even eat that much but im not anorexic so dont start thinking that. Anyway i dont know if i am a vamp. or just one really strange 16 year old with no one to make a conection with cuz i always feel alone....
thanks,
Elizabeth Amber L.
I have always been attracted to the romantic part of being a vampire, the seduction. Not so much the blood but that comes with the territory.
Okay, I guess I'll have to come out as the token Vampire here. I don't really like the word. Yes, I am the real deal. Not pretend... Not Hollywood. Not some mixed up whack-job with "issues". I've been exploring websites all over and I finally thought I had discovered one that would be a helpful link for me to meet others of my kind. To tell you the honest truth, I had absolutely no interest in the whole undead thing. I was just living my life, chasing women, following a slow college life and pursuing a modeling career, got drafted into Vietnam for 4 years, came back stateside to California, and met up with the coolest chick I had ever seen who was into some heavy shit. (not just drugs but we did them too,) She eventually took too much of my blood and I woke up like this. I was pretty pissed, but I loved her. We stayed together for several years, but split up about 20 years ago. Now, I work at night for an upper end retail corporation that I know you all have shopped in... designing the groovy displays that adorn all our stores. I have met others like me, but they are very territorial and don't play well with others. I have a great buddy who is a local phlebotomist who keeps me from starving (although I have a voracious appetite most of the time) and I don't seem to be aging at all which is not that big a deal... really. I've been stuck at 26 old years since 1971. My parents died a long time ago, but I have very old siblings that I am helping to take care of financially. I never had children, but my grand nieces and nephews have plenty. I'm getting to the age that doesn't sit well with the IRS and I'm not sure how I will continue to explain why I have not retired... or died. I love my work and I need it to stay busy. If anybody has any suggestions how I can pass on my money and possessions to myself; I'd love to hear. As for the old saying "Nothing is sure in this life except death and taxes" ...I can attest to you that Taxes continue way after you "die". So I say to you, be happy the normal way you are, and be careful what you wish for. Being a Vampire isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Yours, Ex
The only way I can see to keep the tax collectors from prying too hard is to form an identity of a child and as the child grows you become that child and continue doing this until the end. You would continue to be young. Your old identity would then die in a somewhat normal instance not to draw too much attention and you would then be the child. You cannot have any inheritance though so before your older identity dies you would need to turn over your belongings to the young one. You don't want someone checking into the inheritance laws and if a homeless guy dies it is much less noticeable then if a wealthy well established man dies. Gradually lose contacts with all that know you and slip into the oblivion of the street life all the while being the identity fast asleep in your new abode. Just a though.

I have had dreams since I was a little girl about things when I was young I had no idea about and now that I am much older I am aware of. I have had conversations in my sleep with beings and I sometimes remember and sometimes I don't remember so well, but I do feel them in my mind if that makes any sense at all. No I am not insane and no I don't claim to be a vampyre. I know that I have died and I know that I have been pulled back by something. I know about things from past times that I never read about or have never been taught. I can't be around some people and others I can't take myself away. I feel people, I don't see them. After being around someone in pain I feel their pain or their emotions I sometimes get overwhelmed by the many emotions around me and it makes me angry and that brings about something inside me that I have no control over. I know that I can make people feel things too, but I try not to out of respect for others and my personal rules. My eyes change and I know when something is stirring my passions. I believe in Jesus and I know that I have heard his voice, felt his presence. I want so desperately to know the truth of life and to live a spiritual life, but there is a side of me that is uncontrolable with desires sometimes. I close myself off during this time and keep to myself. Innately I feel that I am good but that part of me that has felt and tasted the dark is there but I keep it at great lengths from destroying the life I have created here and the time that I have spent coming in and out of the realm of life. So..what makes me interested was the question? I need to be with people who understand and I need to have the knowledge that I am not alone. I am not saying that I am a vampyre because honestly with the fictional characters I do not relate, albeit they are sexually attractive no doubt..lol. Besides the word itself has many connotations and many different definitions that I cannot define myself into any of the catagories. Normalcy is what I have on the outside, but inside I have a desire to seek and to know others.
