August 11, 2002 - Who better to promote the virtues of giving blood than a vampire? At least, that's what a Brazilian city councillor thinks and why he wants to officially declare August 13 Vampire Day, to coincide with a city-wide drive for blood donations.  Jose Laurindo de Oliveira said the campaign will also celebrate the vampire in literature and all things gothic.

"Our intention is to pay homage to a good vampire," de Oliveira told Sao Paulo newspaper Jornal da Tarde.

The campaign was started by actress and author Mariliz Marins, daughter of the B-movie horror film maker Jose Mojica Marins, better known as Coffin Joe.

Following in her father's footsteps, Mariliz has created her own alter ego, Lizvamp, who will serve as the campaign's poster girl.

The blood drive is set to begin on Tuesday at Sao Paulo's Pro-Blood Foundation, the largest blood centre in Latin America. The centre supplies 300 hospitals within the city alone.

Mariliz Marins hopes to tap in to a wave of vampire mania expected to sweep across Brazil as the Rede Globo television network launches its latest soap opera, Kiss of the Vampire, on August 26.

The man giving your children nightmares
Just occasionally, when one has wandered into a certain section of Waterstone's, one wonders what it must be like to be the sort of author who writes about hellish demons, throat-gouging werewolves, maggots emerging from corpses' nostrils and vampire bloodbaths. Darren O'Shaughnessy could tell you all about it.

Beauty ties me in bonds of steel-studded leather

I crave the nights forged in blood

Tears fall

Cascading over dried streaks of pain

..then,

Numbness falls

...with the crack of a biting whip.

I stand at the crossroads
With no friend in sight
When an old man comes
And laughs at my plight
He goes down
My old path
I look to the left
And then to the right
I then look back
And see that man
Point left and disappear
I turn down the path
And it goes to my grave
I look back and then go ahead
I face death
And then I wake
