May 24, 2007 (USA Today / Anthony Breznican) -- A Cold War between light and dark supernatural beings boiled over into brutal combat in the Russian fantasy thriller Night Watch, but the conflict takes a more personal form in the sequel Day Watch, opening June 1.

The first film, about a mystical agent, Anton, who polices the vampires, shape-shifters and sorcerers of modern-day Moscow, became a blockbuster in its homeland and a cult hit in the USA when it was released here in 2005.

Now the sequel picks up the story with Anton, one of the Light "Others," trying to protect his monstrous son, one of the Dark creatures who feeds on the human race and threatens the unstable peace between the otherworldly factions.

"We use the language and tools of America genre filmmaking to tell a simple human story," director Timur Bekmambetov says. "It's a conflict between father and son."

In Day Watch, Anton covers up the crimes of his son, a vampire, to protect him from being punished by the forces of Light. "It is like parents whose children are using drugs and they have to live with it somehow. But they still can be against it," Bekmambetov says. "He is a policeman and his son is a gangster, but he is still his son."

Day Watch is the conclusion of the story, though there has been talk about a third movie. Bekmambetov says he isn't sure when or if that might happen, or what form the story would take. He is currently shooting Wanted, with Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman.

*blink blink* 'LB just smacked into the fireplace. But she'll be okay, she's got a hard head.' A small smile creeps across Koreena's lips. 'Demon just gave me a hug. I didn't hug back. Oops. Why am I not moving?' The smile disappears again. 'I'm home. People recognize me, they must have missed me too.' The smile is back again as she is guided to a stool.

Demon looks quizzically at her. After a few moments she lifts her eyes and catches the look.
