June 7, 2007 (Minnesota / Winona Daily News / Kevin Behr) -- Wearing orange prison garb, Michael Earl Kulas Jr. sat quietly as the judge read his sentence in court Wednesday. The 21-year-old, convicted of three counts of sexual criminal conduct, must now serve 20 months in prison after which he will be eligible for 10 months of supervised release. He could face additional time in prison if he violates a 10-year probation.

After his arrest in July, Kulas admitted to having sex with two girls younger than 16 in fall 2005 and spring 2006 but said he was so drunk he couldn’t remember the details. He said he was originally drawn to the first girl, then 15, because she was interested in vampirism, or drinking blood.

Police had been investigating Kulas for possible criminal sexual conduct as early as February 2006, when they warned him to stop hanging around the high school.

During the sentencing, Judge Margaret Shaw Johnson said the decision to send Kulas to prison was not an easy one and weighed heavily on her mind because he is very young. But she added that Kulas’ maturity and psychological issues would make probation impossible and that perhaps he could find assistance at prison rehab facilities.

When the judge asked Kulas if he had anything to say before the court, he fell silent for a moment and then replied, "Not that I can think of."

Judge Johnson then explained Kulas’ sentence. Following his incarceration, he will be free on a 10-year conditional probation.

Those conditions have not been set but will probably include no contact with underage girls, said Winona County Attorney Chuck MacLean. If he violates any of the terms of the conditional release, he could go to prison for 10 years, MacLean said.

The Ojibwa Shaman slit the white man's throat, releasing his last breath as a jet of bright red mist into the cold winter air. Pressing one knee into his victim's back, he grabbed a massive fistfull of the man's long black hair, yanked back the head and ran his blade across the tight forehead. With a sudden, hard wrench, he ripped off the entire scalp as if it were the pelt of a rabbit. Steam rose from the man's naked, blood-slick skull, making it look like it was on fire.
