August 16, 2007 (Zap2It.com) -- James Marsters will trade in his supernatural garb for a role as a down-to-earth cop on "Without a Trace" this season. The former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" star has taken a recurring part on the CBS drama, Marsters says on his web site.

As described there, the role sounds like it could have the potential for a multi-episode arc. He'll play a detective who comes into contact with the FBI's missing-persons team in New York while investigating a human-trafficking ring. After initial contact with Vivian (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), he will become part of task force dealing with human trafficking.

Marsters, of course, is best known as vampire Spike on "Buffy" and "Angel." His credits also include a stint at Prof. Milton Fine/Brainiac on "Smallville," the USA Network movie "Cool Money" and guest spots on "Northern Exposure" and TNT's "Saving Grace." He'll next be seen in the feature film "P.S., I Love You," which is due for release in September.

"Without a Trace" begins its sixth season on CBS Thursday, Sept. 27.

Visually Identifying the Vampire
When we see a picture of a vampire, how do we know that it is a vampire? Fangs and blood-smeared lips are not always present, yet a child can tell a vampire from any number of other strange and devilish-looking Halloween monsters. So what is a vampire’s identifying traits?

People stand and stare at Me
eyes accusing, watching Me
makin' remarks and downin' Me
but still today I'm here.

They'd make me want to hurt Myself
want to break and bleed Myself
till My soul would leave this hell
but still today I'm here.

I got real strong to stop the tears
made Myself forget My fears
turned away and closed My ears
and today I am truly here.

I knew it was coming, I heard it coming, but I said nothing.
I felt my worry increase but was afraid he'd think I cared too much and would back off.
I painfully stepped around the glass until he told me what was going on:
I had to cross the razors beneath my feet slowly, as to not cut myself and bleed to death in his sight.
I simply sat silent as he complained to me, yet I felt my shoulders slump, my energy sag.
His pain oozed over my confused flesh and I turned black for him.
My silence scared him away, but he left the glass behind for me.

Lust for life
Somewhere inside the adult female reader lurks a 12-year-old girl breathless at the idea of romance and mystified by the rules of sexual engagement, the one who (in my case) stayed up three nights straight devouring "Gone With the Wind." Although Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series of vampire romance novels is aimed at young adultsages 12 and up, I'm certain there are a lot of older women reading them too.
