September 10, 2007 (AP / Little Rock) -- Seven weeks before Halloween, Little Rock zookeepers announced Monday the birth of three vampire bats. The staff at the Little Rock Zoo discovered the babies last week and estimate that they are about three weeks old and about 1 1/2 inches tall.
The baby bats rest under their mothers' wing - making them difficult to see - and nurse for more than eight months. After weaning, mothers will feed the babies regurgitated blood until the offspring are able to feed themselves.
The Little Rock Zoo has four breeding pairs of vampire bats. , so the birth of the babies was no surprise. However, because the babies rest under their mothers wing, they are hard to see at times.
The best time to see the baby bats is at 10:30 a.m., when zookeepers feed the colony dishes of cattle blood.
