February 6, 2008 (Chicago Tribune) -- Before Barack Obama entered the cutthroat world of politics, it seems he was involved in a whole other kind of blood sport: hunting vampires.

At least that's the premise of "Barackula: The Musical," an upcoming Web-only film that uses the real words of the Illinois senator and Democratic presidential hopeful to tell a fictional tale of Obama battling vampires at Harvard Law School.

Helping the fictional Obama get his "Blade" on is first-time director Mike Lawson, who described "Barackula" to MTV News as a "short political horror rock musical" -- sort of like "Thriller" meets "Jesus Christ Superstar."

In the film, Obama is played by actor Justin Sherman, who, as co-writer of two original songs in the production, also helps give bite to the senator's words.

The film cleverly plays on themes in the senator's real-life presidential campaign with musical numbers like "This is our Time."

Sample lyrics?

"Chicago-community organizing/That's where I belong/I can't be a vampire/That is why I sing this song."

The real Obama was more noted for being the first black president of the Harvard Law Review than for staking vamps. But, given that his representatives' lips are sealed about the film, who's to say he didn't really meet bloodsuckers?

Love not the way I think you dear,

nor of the way I hold you near,

As vampires gain in popularity, they start to appeal to a different kind of person as well: the self-styled vampire hunter. The long-running popular television show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, about a group of teenaged vampire fighters in California, has influenced this subculture. While for many, it's just role-playing, some take this game with deadly seriousness.

People are afraid of my kind
No one is safe when I am around
I do not sleep at night, I do not ever sleep
I died many moons ago
I am a vampire
The undead

I walk the streets looking for innocent humans
The blameless are always a better kill
Their blood, more health-giving
There's always a chance of an after-life with us
A creature of the night
I am a vampire
The Undead

In a coffin made of blood, made of blood
Kiss me baby
So I can taste your blood
I am dead, living-dead

May 7, 2002 (ABC News) - You can probably imagine how long your wait would be at airport security if your passport read "Kingdom of Dracula."
