It's over for me...

I walk alone in the darkness as late becomes early.
Far away the sound of a dog barking as I take a full breath into my
lungs. Cool, still air with a small unexpected breeze.
Trees lit from underneath from street lights along my path.

I walk for miles, listening with my eyes, with my skin,
and feeling the stillness surrounding me. No sudden sounds, no chaos
no company. Even the cat that runs by
that stops and looks at me then runs off, only breaks the silence
when it's feet sprint through the leaves.

I pass the buildings where people rest, see a flickering light in one window
the kind that a late night television makes. I hear the shoooosh of a car turning
onto the street and over the wet pavement ahead of me and onto a driveway.
Last remnants of a radio and the engine switching off, giddy laughter and
the sound of dress shoes walking up the drive.
Fumbled keys and a door shut and locked, then my silence again.

The wind picks up, only for a moment and lifts my hair and
brushes it against my cheek. I shiver from the tickle of it, and pull my hands around me,
buried into the pockets of my jacket. I smell a bit of gasoline from the car,
and the wet pavement, and the thin air of night, my perfume faded from before..

I come upon a break in the canopy of trees above me and stop to look at the sky.
The full moon is swallowed and caressed by the black clouds as they move by,
then released to shine once again. I'm unsure if I want it to be more light, or
very dark.
To be invisible with the other things that are invisible, or able to see them
there.

The end of the street and another road. I take the one leading to the boulevard.
Bright orange lights and the neon on the doors of businesses. Parking lots
vacant, with scattered tepees of light from towering poles, dotting the surface.
Two cars, left overnight at the street end, for sale signs in the windows.

I look towards the stores that are closed and decide to steer clear of
walking too closely to them, or the alleyways the separate them.
Stray dogs and other wild life that would not invite my company within them.
I watch the random car driving along, to work, home, nowhere....like I have
done.

I hear my steps, play at making them quieter, nonexistent. Step into a puddle
withmy left sneaker, and look back to see only one foot print as I pass under a
parking lot light.
I step over the curb and take a dirt path to a fence with a space in it, and cut
through to the cemetery. Somehow it seems even more silent here, like the breeze is even
mute.

Somehow I wonder where the cat went and think it might feel nice to have it's
quiet company now.
I navigate the gravestones by the moonlight when it is not slipping behind the
clouds.
Always reverent and careful to not step directly on anyones place of rest. I
lift a plant that has fallen over and place it upright again. I can smell the new dirt and
old flowers here.

I sit on the stone wall surrounding this place and see that the sky has turned
from gray black to a lighter shade. I begin to hear car engines starting and cannot see the moon
anymore.
As a sadness flows though me. The world is awake, my night is gone, the silence
and peace of it is falling away. I head home, trying to get back before it becomes too light. I
want to get in before the Sun becomes too bright in my eyes and burns away the
experience .
I have had the past few hours. Night is leaving me...

What happens when theres a war?
Death and Malice is what comes to mind;
What is the point of war?....Order?
How do you bring about order with chaos?
In war there are casualties, heroes, and civilians;
But when the war is in your backyard
no one is safe and there are no heroes;
If the war is in your backyard there
is nothing 'cept casualties and despair.
