The Historical Dracula, Vlad III Tepes, 1431-1476

Historical Background: Most are probably aware of the fact that when Bram Stoker penned his immortal classic, _Dracula_, he based his vampire villain on an actual historical figure. Stoker's model was Vlad III Dracula (call Tepes, pronounced tse-pesh); a fifteenth century voivode or prince of Wallachia of the princely House of Basarab.

Vampire Culture

Stories of vampires have been around throughout recorded history. Belief in vampires is pervasive through cultures all over the globe. So it is not surprising that there is an abundance of fictional vampires and their fans around today. What is surprising are the people who attempt to live a Vampiric lifestyle.

A Hunger

The Vampire in History

They swept across the Bosphorus and into Eastern Europe with a vengeance, conquering the squabbling Slavs with ease. With them, they brought their middle eastern civilization, and some of their beliefs, but mostly they brought suffering. Suffering in the form of syphilis, leprosy, smallpox, tuberculosis... and God Himself seemed to turn against them, sending flood, earthquakes, and plague.

"Vampire" arrested

August 25, 2008 (Jim Schoettler / The Times-Union) -- A man who police say claims to be a 225-year-old vampire is being held in a Virginia jail, charged with sexually battering a young Jacksonville girl in May and two other young girls he was living with at the time of his arrest last week.
