read any good vamp books lately?

Just thought I'd get a discussion going about vamp books. I've read a few lately, some better than others.

"The Book of Renfield" by Tim Lucas is fantastic -- Renfield takes center stage during the time of Bram Stoker's Dracula, so we see things from his point of view, as well as hear a great deal from others such as Dr. Seward. We also get a glimpse into Renfield's past. Highly recommended.

"The Society of S" by Susan Hubbard is pretty good, although reads at a slow pace. It's not a typical vampire novel; it's more of a coming-of-age story who's protagonist happens to be part vampire. I've been meaning to write a full review but have been having trouble putting my thoughts down, since it is a different kind of vampire story.

"The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova has been a good read so far, I've only got a couple of chapters left. Mixes a great deal of interesting history in the pursuit of Vlad the Impaler. Once you hit about mid-way through the story, it starts to jump back and forth between various voices, past and present -- it initially can be confusing, but it doesn't take long to get used to it. I'm no history buff, but I like the blend of fact and fiction, even though I've been told some facts have been massaged to better fit the story.

Once I'm done with "The Historian" I'll probably finish a couple of non-vamp books.

Cheers, V.
