Are we getting too soft?

As a society, as people, do you think we are becoming too soft? I was speaking to someone this morning about our dads. (dads that are in their 80's) And how they were raised by dads that could gash open a finger, duct tape it closed and walk it off.  Woman that gave birth at home and that most injuries didn't require time off work(my mom tells the tale of going to school each day with a boil on her knee. What is a boil?) or school, or life on the farm. Yet I have to admit to feeling sick and not going in, but not exactly being at the boil on my knee/sawed off finger level.

They of course did not have the cushy, pain relieving antibiotic creams, or the heat wraps, or millions of pain relievers. But I wonder if all this 'progress' has left us weak in a way. Maybe it was a good thing to 'walk it off' and not sit in the corner all about a skinned knee or sprained wrist for days. Maybe it is not good for us as parents to fawn over every boo boo, or illness to the point of allowing our little people to believe they are some how incapacitated. *l* On the flip side though apparently pregnancy used to be thought of as a delicate condition, and now women are allowed only one day in the hosp, and usually work till they give birth and are expected to 'walk it off' and head back to work soon after. So maybe it's just the guys that are swapping alcohol to clean a wound, for daily facial exfoliants;).

It's funny to imagine how unimpressed that Men and Women of 70 yrs ago would be if they were watching the guys on "Deadliest Catch". Strange how those kind of people and the ones that seem to walk though injury and illness seem like such an oddity today.
