Grown up?

I'm 40 now. Not much like the other women I know that would lie about their age or try to dye the stray white hairs that are beginning to frame their face. I actually cherish mine and wouldn't go back to my 20's or 30's for anything. Personally I can say I've never been better, stronger or more sure of who I am and what I want in this life. Still with all the time in the world to get out there and get it too. I'm not even afraid to head towards fifty, I know I'll be even better then.

But there is one thing some friends and I were discussing. I'm not sure I'm grown up. We were thinking about how 40 yr olds appeared to us when we were in our twenties and they seemed so together and mature and serious. Like they knew everything about investment banking and managing their lives and raising kids. They seemed like  "grown ups".  Not exactly how we all seemed. We tell dirty jokes, and speak in sarcastic comedy, and listen to heavy metal and watch cartoons on late night . We avoid the news and  even though we will listen to talk radio in the car, we'd still prefer music.  We still goof on eachother and have the common bond of sharing how we messed things up in our lives, and can laugh about it all. All of us a smidge more wise assed than wise.

Maybe from this side of it , we are seeing that side of getting older that was hidden from us as kids. Or we are just happier, or living in easier times, able to enjoy ourselves more.

What do you think fellow oldsters. Especially lol Ranger...Vlad...*cough* DEATH.... you fellas feel mature and grown up yet?

LadyBlak

*ready to begin collecting cats*

*coughs

What was that LadyBlak eh?, speak up woman *holds the horn to his ear...

Well, now that you mention it, my hair doesn't grow quite as fast and there is the errant grey mixed in it but aside from that I really feel no distinction physically from when I was in my 20's. Still prefer Heavy metal and the darker side of the Goth world to Muzac so that's good. I wouldn't say I have Peter Pan syndrome but I'm certainly not the way my grandparents or parents were at this age to my recollection.

Are we more wise? Good question, I'm not sure I'm wise enough yet to answer that question Laughing out loud

*puts on a pair of heelies and rolls around purgatory...

wider, not wiser

Well I felt young until I read this post! Actually, I too still feel pretty much the same as when I was in my twenties... starting to look my age, for sure, but not necessarily acting it.

Same goes with my friends, we still act like idiots when we're together, unless we're in a situation where appearing to be adults is a requirement! Eye-wink

So I tortured a few people in the 1400's. Do you know how boring it was back then? I mean, there really wasn't much else to do. Vamp

In my twenties...

Had to get my 1/2 cent in... Yeah, I'm only 23 but I had to grow up young. I wasn't allowed sleep overs or parties or, really, anything much other than raising my younger brothers while my parents went out and partied. I used to hold a lot of resentment because of that. I felt that they had stolen my childhood and that they owed me. Really, that the world owed me. LB, DEATH, and Vlad can tell you that when I first started calling the VO home, I needed help. The past two years have been hard. After several suicide attempts, drug and alcohol abuse, several hospital visits, the homeless shelter, rehab, and finally God and Jesus, I have found that "growing up" isn't so much what happens when you get a year older, its what happens when you stop finding fun. It doesn't matter what age you are. You can be 40 and not be grown up, or 23 and be older than your years. I, for one, plan on embracing what time I have left on this earth with open arms, an open heart, and an open mind. I also resolve, instead of "growing up", to "grow down", have fun, crack jokes, be stupid and love life for what life is, thanking God for the many chances he gave me to get to this point.

moi=teen

i'm still a teen (16 if you want to be exact), Raevynn i think your totally right, and your past is unfortunate but i am glad you like (although i think that is a large understatement) your present. I guess i still have growing but really i think it all goes to the mind, like how you perceive things in life. Like if your a pessimist then your not growing at all (and it's just me saying) but if your an optimist or even look at things from many different view points then your growing quite a bit. Like Raevynn said you can be any age and act older or younger, but to me age is just a number, a symbol to the amount of years, months, weeks, days you have been able to live here and the amount of experience. for me growing up is a large understatement it should be growing wiser, and stronger to the many obstacles that are still ahead.
***this is my first post***
P.S. my hair doesnt turn grey or gray, mine is turning blond-like even though i'm a dark brunette
