those glowing red eyes

mounted in a mastiff's body.
I came in peace
and in seek of knowledge
I posed no threat to him or his kind
he sent his hound on me
for no apparent reason.
Rescued I was
by a tall dark stranger
the evil hound dead by his side
he saved my life
this wierd stranger.

From the Jewish letters (lettres juives), letter 137 -- We have just had in this part of Hungary a scene of vampirism, which is duly attested by two officers of the tribunal of Belgrade, who went down to the places specified, and by an officer of the emperor's troops at Graditz, who was an ocular witness of the proceedings.

The Vampire Maid - Hume Nisbet
James Hume Nisbet (1849-1923), author and artist, was born on 8 August 1849 at Stirling, Scotland, son of James Nisbet, house-decorator, and his wife Jane, née Hume. He was educated in letters under Rev. Dr James Culross and in painting under the artist Sam Bough, R.S.A. Of a roving disposition, at 16 he went to Melbourne and found various jobs. About 1868 he spent a year playing small parts with Walter Montgomery and others at the Theatre Royal. He then wandered around eastern Australia, New Zealand and the South Sea Islands.
