Give it a try. I'm not going to attempt to describe the plot, since I couldn't do it justice. I will say that it involves a train, Halley's comet, San Francisco, the earthquake of 1906, several characters dislocated in time, and one arrogant, heartless vampire who has a little difficulty digesting the local red stuff.
This novel portrays graphic violence and sadistic sexual acts, but they are an integral part of the plot and characterization. The vampire is a vile creation, but he is a well developed character rather than a mindless and fanged monster.
The focus of this book does not rest on the vampire, but rather swings between several diverse characters. Wilde's style of writing is a little different, and not always easy to follow, but well worth the effort of a little thought from the reader.
