Book seven of the Undead series finds Betsy growing into her role as the reigning vampire Queen as she assumes some responsibility for the Fiends. Garrett was once a Fiend but thanks to Betsy's blood, had sufficiently recovered enough to enter into a relationship with Antonia, a werewolf with an uncanny ability to see the future. The Fiends, vampires who were starved to the point of losing their sanity, have been "awakened" by Garrett's efforts and are now seriously pissed at Betsy.
Between fighting with the ghost of her despised stepmother known as the Ant and trying to keep her household from being torn apart by the Fiends, Betsy already has her hands full. Still, when Nick requests her assistance in solving a series of strange deaths, Betsy goes against her husband's wishes and offers to help. Perhaps Nick, who has ample reason to hate her, will come to see that there are good and bad vampires just as there are good and bad people. It would be a good plan but for one major, unforeseen hitch that will shake humans and vampires alike.
It is a treat to see the vampire Queen start to assume the mantle of leadership, take more personal responsibility and generally grow up. Relationships between the main characters continue to develop nicely while hints of more interaction between the werewolf and vampire communities tease the imagination. Davidson's keen sense of humor and fast pace make this series a delight.
