The Ultimate OVA series (2006) continues the popular vampire hunter broadcast series Hellsing (2001), both of which were based on the manga by Kouta Hirano. Vampires are stalking England, which means Sir Integra Hellsing must take them out. Most of this 50-minute segment is devoted to a duel between Hellsing's super-vampire Arucard and Father Alexander Anderson, a bio-engineered vampire in the service of the Vatican's murderous Iscariot Organization. It's a veritable gorefest, but not a particularly original one: the shooting effects are copied from T2, while the ghouls recall The Night of the Living Dead. The dialogue is often unintentionally hilarious: "It's been a while since I had my head cut off." Viewers may be repulsed by the endless sprays of blood, the leering sadism, and misappropriation of religious symbols. The tin-boxed Limited Edition comes with a second disc of extras that includes staff interviews and a promotional music video. (Rated 16 and older, but more appropriate for 18 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, sadism, sexual situations, grotesque imagery, offensive religious imagery, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Feeling the pain,
Seeing the blood,
Not knowing how to heal either,
Looking on and hiding the shame,
Wondering when the tears will flood,
Seeking the truth, finding lies and wanting neither.

Life in it's endless progression,
Tearing at your soul,
The fear welling from your memories,
Retreating, hiding, burying yourself in regression,
The heart within beating slowly, dark and cold,
Spending your nights in empty graves, dwelling in cemetaries.

Who are you? What to do?

The story of Arnod Paole is one of the few vampire histories that has been sufficiently documented over the years to lend it historical validity. In the spring of 1727, Arnod Paole returned from service in the military to settle in his home town of Meduegna, near Belgrade. He bought some land, built a home and established himself in the community. After a short time, he was betrothed to a local girl whose father's land bordered his, and the two were wed.

Throughout the ages, attacks on people have been attributed to supernatural creatures like werewolves and vampires, but in 1886, a German neurologist named Richard von Krafft-Ebing noted the compulsive and sexual presentation of the attacks. He wrote about them in Psychopathia Sexualis, and many of his 238 case histories concerned a violent eroticism triggered by blood.

Walking away,
the tattered remnants
of ribbons that bind,
fall to the ground.
A tear escapes
as I watch
the beauty we built together
crumble to dust.
Yet, beneath the sorrow,
a flame burns.
Growing brighter,
it becomes my wine
till I am drunk
with the freedom.
Looking back on the scars
I wore with pride,
a sense of contentment
swallows me whole.
No small regrets,
I will never kneel again.
